Green Literacy: Buildings & Infrastructure

Infinite Campus/Academic Planner Course Number: 9117

The School of Environmental Studies (SES) is a magnet school that prides itself on the real-life, professional experiences we offer students. An increasingly growing field is the area of green careers. SES is a LEED-Certified School. Part of the obligation of LEED Certification is continuous tracking of performance in energy, water, waste, transportation, indoor air quality, toxin free environment and occupant satisfaction. This work requires consulting with professionals in various fields in written and verbal forms. It requires producing a written report to the (United States Green Building Council) USGBC. At SES, we believe adults shouldn’t do this work, if it could instead lead to meaningful learning for students. Having an opportunity to solve a real life problem (recertification of our LEED status), while interacting with professionals in an occupational field they may be interested in is meaningful learning. Students will be motivated to produce authentic, high quality work in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and multimedia because professionals will be the recipients and the ultimate outcome will positively impact the school.
