Friday Field Notes for August 21

Hello SES Community,

Last year we sent out a communication every week called SES Weekly Wednesday Updates and we plan to continue that this year, but with a slight alteration.  This year we will be sending out our Friday Field Notes on… you guessed it… Fridays!  These communications will contain summaries from the week and important information regarding upcoming events within our SES community. Please watch for these messages and feel free to reach out with any questions.

We are continuing to figure out details for how the next few weeks will come together. Know that we are diligently working on:

  • Finalizing schedules for all students

  • Making a plan for students and parents to come to the building in small groups the week of September 8th to meet teachers, walk their schedule,  receive materials, and generally get ready for an amazing school year

Please look for information next week with more details on these items and more.

While this fall doesn’t quite feel the same as others, teachers and school staff can’t help but get the typical back-to-school excitement. We are SO looking forward to starting this year with each student!!

Be well,

Lauren Trainer- Principal

Meet our new Dean of Students!

Hello SES students and families,

I am Trent Thompson, the new Dean at SES. I am coming from Plymouth Middle School in the Robbinsdale school district. I served as a school counselor at Plymouth for 4 years, prior to that I was a counselor with Minneapolis Public Schools in their Indian Education program. At Plymouth I enjoyed having opportunities to coach basketball and track and support high school students during summer credit recovery.  I grew up in district 196 and have recently moved back to the area with my family. My wife is a special education teacher. We have a 1 1/2 year old son, Baker, and another boy due in January of 2021. In my free time I enjoy being active, spending time with my family, and following sports. I am extremely excited to be back in the district and at SES.

Summer Reading Reminder

While the school year may look a little different, one thing that hasn’t changed is our summer reading. Make sure you’re ready for the start of the school year by completing the summer reading assignment. Check out the details for Juniors and Seniors here. A few of the AP classes also have summer reading assignments, so make sure you look for that info in the letters as well. If you have any questions or concerns about the reading—you’re not too late to get it done now—please contact kim.colburnlindell@district196.org (Juniors) or molly.melton@district196.org (Seniors).

Upcoming Important Dates

  • Orientation/ Open House - Week of 9/8-9/11 (Details coming next week!)
  • Student Picture Day Cohort A - 9/28
  • Student Picture Day Cohort B - 9/29
  • Student Picture Day Cohort C - 9/30 - bussing will be provided

Student Parking Permits

During hybrid learning, students will only be at school two days per week and so the cost of a parking permit for the first trimester will be ⅖ the typical cost, which comes out to $32. The ability to purchase a parking permit will NOT be available in the MyPaymentsPlus system until next week, but we wanted to give you a heads up that the cost has been determined by the district.

SES-Specific Information for the 2020-21 School Year

We have created a document that contains details specifically relevant to the SES learning community. We will continue to update this document between now and the official start of school for students on Monday, September 14. Please keep in mind that these details are fluid and will likely change, but our goal is to keep this document as up-to-date as possible. SES Back to School Info - August 2020

SES Enrollment for the 2020-21 School Year

More, now then ever, we are understanding the value of a supportive community.  SES strives to offer this support to our students as they learn, grow and become the leaders of tomorrow. We still have openings for this fall and would ask that you please pass this on to any friends and neighbors that might find SES to be the educational opportunity they are looking for!  Visit https://ses.district196.org to apply.
