Weekly Wednesday Update May 27

Hello SES Families,

Only two weeks remain of the 2019-20 school year.  The last day for Seniors is Wednesday, June 3, and the last day for Juniors is Wednesday, June 10th.

Juniors still have one more week of new curriculum as they wrap up their school year.  Additionally, they will have the opportunity to drop off/pick up items at SES on the last two days of school (Tuesday, June 9 and Wednesday, June 10th) by signing up for a 10 minute appointment. A message went out yesterday outlining some initial details regarding these “visits” to SES. SES Juniors: Drop Off/Pick Up Opportunity.

Next week is a big week for our SES seniors as they have the opportunity to participate in their 3-part graduation experience.  It starts with their selected appointment time on 6/1 - 6/3.  During these 10-minutes appointments, each graduate will be able to drop off/pick up items at SES and receive their SES graduation certificate, while having the opportunity to take pictures in their cap and gown with Birch Pond as a backdrop. On Thursday, they have the option to participate in a car processional through the SES parking lot, where staff will be socially distanced around the perimeter to wave and wish the graduates congratulations. Then at 7:00 their virtual graduation will be aired on the ISD 196 YouTube Channel to celebrate and honor the class of 2020.

Senior families will be receiving a message this afternoon with explicit details regarding the flow and parameters for their drop off/pick up and presentation of certificate appointments on 6/1 - 6/3.  They will receive an additional message next week with explicit details regarding the flow and parameters for the car processional on Thursday 6/4 from 5:30 - 6:30 pm. If you have any questions regarding graduation please visit our website for SES Graduation Information 2020.

A Few Additional Notes about Graduation

Special SES Graduation Tassels

Each student’s cap and gown order comes with a tassel that matches the home high school’s colors. Josten’s has designed a special SES tassel available via FeePay for $15. The tassel is green and white with a gold dolphin decoration. There are a limited number available. Students who order this tassel by Friday, May 29 at 4 PM will receive it when they come to SES to pick up and drop off materials on June 1-3. Tassels ordered after that time will be mailed to students, until supplies run out.

In FeePay, please search for Course# 59161 “19-20 SES Graduation Tassels.”

UPDATE ON SENIOR GIFT BAGS

The Senior Party Committee is almost halfway to their goal!  Please consider making a donation and/or sharing their campaign on social media platforms.  Their GoFundMe campaign will be active through graduation on June 4, 2020.  Any amount is greatly appreciated and the Senior Party Committee thanks you for your support of our Seniors!  Gift bags will be distributed to Seniors when they come to school for their drop off/pick up of materials and their presentation of the SES certificate at their selected time on either June 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

Celebrating our SES 2020 Grads!

The parent committee for the SES senior graduation party has developed a new plan to celebrate our 2020 graduates.  Hosting the traditional all night graduation party is not an option due to COVID-19,  but we think it's important to still recognize our graduates with something special to commemorate this rite of passage.  We plan to provide each graduate with a gift bag of SES themed gifts and other treasures.  COVID-19 has also impacted the committee's ability to meet fundraising goals.  We have kicked off a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to raise at least an additional $12,000.  This would allow us to spend $100 on each student's gift bag.  If we exceed our goal, additional funds will be used to enhance gift bag treasures and SES graduation celebrations.    Please consider making a donation to help us celebrate our 2020 SES graduates.  We are relying on your tax deductible donations to make this happen.  Any amount is appreciated.

GoFundMe campaigns are most successful when shared on social media platforms.  Please share this on your social media accounts, as every bit helps.  Thank you for your generosity!

Student Fines/Fees

Please note that weekly emails have been sent to your student regarding any checked out and overdue books and materials (including iPads). Please watch for those emails and plan on your student returning all materials when they come for their 10-minute time slot in June.  If your student was issued a badge to enter the building, that also needs to be turned in to avoid a $5 replacement fee. Additionally, you have been notified if your student has any outstanding fees related to field trips or Intensive Theme.  These Fees, in addition to the replacement cost for any lost items, need to be made as soon as possible.

Seniors who have not paid their fines, fees or returned their books cannot pick up their diploma.

Payment can be made two ways:

  1. There will be a basket available at the student’s 10-minute drop off/pick up appointment in June.  Payment (check payable to SES or exact cash) must be in an envelope with the student’s name.  Please note: the payment will NOT be checked and entered into the system during the appointment.
  2. A check, made payable to SES, can be sent by mail to the school with a note indicating the student's name and the fine being paid:

SES Yearbook

Yearbook signing is here!

And there, and wherever you want it to be since this year, it will be a digital signing. Just visit yearbooksigning.jostens.com to get started. You will create a unique link through Jostens, and send that link out to all you want to sign your yearbook. You don’t have to have purchased a yearbook to sign one! Then, when ready, just print the pages and keep them with your yearbook. It may not be the same, but the tradition still lives on.

Additionally, you can still get a physical copy of the 2019-20 SES yearbook!  There are a limited number of copies available, payment must be made in advance of distribution through the FeePay system (orders are no longer being accepted through Josten's website).  The cost for a yearbook is $50, with a reduced price available for students that qualify for free/reduced lunch.

Distribution of yearbooks will take place when students visit SES to drop off/pick up materials (6/1- 6/3 for Seniors and 6/9-6/10 for Juniors) You must make your payment in advance of your scheduled appointment time, NO in-person payments will be accepted.

Mental Health Support Available through the summer!

Emotional ups & downs are to be expected during this time of COVID crisis, but if your son/daughter is experiencing any of the following, please consider reaching out for some extra support:

●  Increased problems in multiple areas of life: academic, social, family relationships, etc.

●  Excessive worry

●  Crying, hopelessness, or feeling sad

●  Significant changes in sleeping or eating habits

●  Feeling bad about themselves

●  Withdrawal from activities or relationships they used to enjoy

●  Engaging in negative behaviors

●  Self harm behaviors or statements like “I wish I weren’t here”

At SES, we have a relationship with the Associated Clinic of Psychology. They have a clinician that provides services to our students on-site during normal times and they continue to be available now via tele-health through the summer. Through a grant from the state of Minnesota, they are able to offer services to students in Dakota County regardless of insurance coverage. They will work directly with the insurance plan on your behalf to answer any questions.

  • During regular business hours, call the school and home-based Client Coordinator at 612-455-8643 and indicate that your son or daughter attends SES.

Reminders for AP Makeup Exams

Students who requested a makeup exam will receive either an email confirmation or additional information about their request on May 28. Makeup exams take place June 1–5. Get the full schedule, and view tips to help students prepare.

In their confirmation email, students will receive instructions about what to do if they have two exams at the same time. They should take one exam on the makeup date and request to take the other one during the June 22–30 exception testing dates.

Although the majority of students have successfully submitted their exams, AP instituted a backup email submission process for browser-based exams. This option will only be available for students who weren't able to submit in the standard process—and they must then email their responses immediately following their exam.

Summer School Options

SES students will have several options to make up credit during the summer even though SES does not have it's own summer school program.  SES students can make up credits through their home high school (AVHS, EHS, EVHS, RHS) or through either ABE/Dakota Valley or DCAL's programs. Here's the information we have received so far.  Please reach out directly to the specific site for registration
